Key Points from the president’s speech regarding International Travel to South Africa

  • Leisure travel to South Africa will resume from October 1st, 2020.
  • Only countries that have suitably dealt with the spread of COVID-19 will initially be able to enter the country. A list of countries will be published and based on the latest scientific data and statistics available.
  • Anybody entering the country from abroad will be required to have had a COVID-19 test within 72 hours of their flights departure and the result NEGATIVE.
  • Should anybody arrive without a test they will be subject to compulsory quarantine at their own expense.
  • Only 3 airports will operate for international travel: OR Thambo in Johannesburg, Cape Town International and King Shaka in Durban.
  • There will be strict screenings for the virus on arrival and anybody showing symptoms of it will be required to go into quarantine until a negative test result can be shown.
  • Travellers will be required to download the “Covid Alert South Africa Application,” which will use their phones to assist officials in tracking anybody that has recently contracted the virus and any of their close contacts.

“We are ready to open our doors again to the world and invite travelers to enjoy our mountains, our beaches, our vibrant cities, and our wildlife game parks in safety and confidence.”
